Artists Statement: Andrew Daniel
I see landscape painting as a tool for deeper observation of nature. In this amazing natural environment that we all share, there are many daily opportunities to stop and admire the cycles of life. Nature speaks with a quiet humble voice. Its language is subtle. Most of the day we drown it out with the logistics and dramatics of society; until it catches up with us on that sunset drive home. Landscape painting is a tool for digging beneath the thoughtscape that we inhabit. It is a tool that peels away the layers of distraction. It is a diplomat, who sets the stage for dialog between human and nature. As we slow down to listen we recognize that within this moment there is a shared voice; that the inner voice of the human is nature.
P.S. I have turned another corner with my art. My desire to work from nature became more inspiring then my initial thrust for bold geometry. My latest attempts have been to work more directly from nature, while trying to bring in abstract composition sensibilities and intuitive colors. Over time I am working to create a more intuitive composition process, through pulling inspiration from multiple sources and placing them in the painting in a collage like fashion. 08-16-06
